Setts are traditionally laid with one edge just touching the string line.

Lay the setts on a mortar base up to 30 mm thick three parts sharp sand to one part cement.
This has the effect of creating running joints that are not precise.
Position the granite setts a finger width apart or as required.
Whether using a dry sand or a wet mortar mix the setts need positioning and individually setting to the required final level.
Laying setts the setts need to be set into the bedding layer by hand.
Care should be taken to maintain the correct falls and or cambers.
When dry fill the joints with a workable mortar using a pointing trowel.
